Try to keep up with Ty Segall. One minute a punk burner, then a pretty T. Rex ballad, maybe some psych….he just keeps putting out killer stuff. This one features sax pretty heavily, a fuzzy and funky bass line, I don’t know, man, just check it out.

From Bandcamp: “The 1″ 16-track analog master was found in a basement in 2016. J Robbins painstakingly baked and restored the tape before remixing it for improved fidelity. The lo-fi, low-tech charm remains.” Indeed it does. Previously only available on cassettes sold on the original Jawbreaker run. Super cool.

The Hold Steady

Entitlement Crew b​/​w A Snake In The Shower, out now on Bandcamp.
Any new Hold Steady music is always welcome, but 2 new pretty great tracks? Hell, yeah. This stand alone single was released ahead of their yearly NYC residency so “you can sing along at the shows”. Entitlement Crew would be at home on Boys and Girls in America or be one of the standout tracks on the more recent albums, whereas Snake in the Shower is super classic Almost Killed Me or even Lifter Puller talk/singing Craig Finn material. Best lyricist in the game, if you ask me. If you have any clue what any of that means, you definitely want to listen to these songs. Promise.

of Montreal, Wild Child, Larkin Poe among first wave of bands announced for Savannah Stopover 2018

Earlier today, Savannah Stopover announced the first wave of bands for the 3-day festival in March 2018.

of Montreal, who packed Forsyth Park during Savannah Stopover 2013, will return as one of the festival headliners. The iconic Athens-based band will perform at the Ships of the Sea on Saturday, March 10th.

Today’s announcement included two other must-see Athens acts — Pylon Reenactment Society and David Barbe & Inward Dream Ebb — along with about three dozen other bands representing a breadth of genres. This wave accounts for only about half the bands in the final lineup, so stay tuned for more announcements, including around 10 Savannah bands.

Savannah Stopover has established a reputation for snagging some big names before they got big, and that looks to be happening again for 2018 with performers like 20-year old New Yorker Gus Dapperton and the British band Shopping.

The initial lineup includes several stellar bands that played previous Stopovers, including Wild Child and Honduras, but most of the acts on the list will be playing in Savannah for the first time. We’ll have a number of preview posts before the festival and obviously share updates as new bands are added.

Hey everybody,
I’d say this looks like a fairly good weekend for music downtown.  Any week that has Black Tusk and The Whores can’t be too bad, right Tom?  This is a quick look at several of the shows I would recommend this week.  I hope you get a chance to catch a couple of them.

I would also like to add that there is a new local band playing at Sulfur Studios on Sunday, The Ramages.  I’m not sure how they’ll sound, but I’m pretty sure the bands after them are gonna be good, so you may as well try to show up.  I am looking forward to it the most this week.

Another bit of local talent that’s flying subtly under the radar here, Keith Baudry has been around the music scene for a while now transitioning from projects on and off again. This time, he’s set down his electric guitar in favor of a bit of acoustic guitar work. Drawing influence from the likes of The Mountain Goats and Sufjan Stevens, Keith’s latest (presumably self recorded) album is a bit lo-fi, but shows a ton of heart and promise. ~ Petey

The brains behind Sunglow and The Lipschitz has been busy with his latest project, Bummerville. Equal parts groove heavy indie rock and lo-fi garage rock, if you’re a fan of either of the previously mentioned projects, you’re sure to enjoy this one. ~ Petey

Okay, so this is the fourth full length album these Aussie weirdos have put out this year, and it’s pretty much exactly what you would guess at this point…trippy psych, prog, noodling, flashes of genius, some filler, basically music that should be popular in Colorado, Alaska, etc. (and D.C.), but here’s the thing, they put out this album for free. As in, do what you want with it. If you want to press it to vinyl and sell it, they’re okay with that! Burn a million CDs (do people still do that?) and give them away? Sure, why not? Post the YouTube link on a music blog? Uhhh….

Deep Roots Festival: review + photos

I headed down to Milledgeville a few weeks ago for my first/the fourteenth annual Deep Roots Festival. I was really impressed with the lineup–for the low, low price of $8, you got to see Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Drivin N Cryin, Muddy Magnolias, & Trae Pierce. I think the promoters kind of outdid themselves with the great lineup, as there really wasn’t enough room for everyone by the end of the night, but the festival seemed well run overall. Food & drink prices were not outlandish & the sets were each around 45 minutes–long enough to get a good feel for the artists, not so short that it felt like anyone was being rushed off stage.
I arrived in time for the second set, Trae Pierce & the T-Stone Band, & was able to grab a great spot on the rail. This was my second time seeing them & I was again impressed. They play with such joy & energy, it’s readily apparent they love what they do. In an era of hearing the same old thing on the radio day after day, their variety is refreshing. They played several originals, but it was their phenomenal assortment of covers that was the highlight of the set. Jumping effortlessly from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme song to The Beatles to Rage Against the Machine to Michael Jackson, each opening guitar riff brought out a new opportunity to guess what song would be coming up next.
Next up was Drivin N Cryin. A great many people were at the festival just to see them, & the crowd got noticeably thicker as the veteran Southern rockers appeared on stage. They sang all their hits in celebration of the re-release of 1989’s Mystery Road. Many crowd members got extremely emotional & there was a great deal of singing along, especially on Straight to Hell (lead singer Kevn Kinney described it as “being about Romeo & Juliet if they had grown up in Milledgeville”).

Savannah Music Festival releases 2018 lineup, including finale with Jason Isbell + 11 other acts

The Savannah Music Festival has just released the lineup for the 17-day fest in 2018. Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, 11/10. The new season was announced tonight with a free show by Sammy Miller and The Congregation at the North Garden Assembly Room at the Ships of the Sea Museum.

In addition to the lineup of world-class talent in a variety of traditional genres, the 2018 SMF will feature two new venues, including The Yamacraw Center for the Performing Arts at the arts-focused Garrison Elementary.

And the Savannah Music Festival is introducing an exciting new feature for 2018 — an all-day, general admission event on 4/14 utilizing new spaces at Trustees’ Garden. The day will feature 12 acts on three stages, including Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Gillian Welch, Marc Broussard, Brent Cobb, Brett Dennen, Septeto Santiaguero, Mipso, Sammy Miller & The Congregation, Betsayda Machado y Parranda El Clavo, Velvet Caravan with Jessica Ann Best, and Stringband Spectacular, the culmination of the SMF’s amazing Acoustic Music Seminar.

You can obviously see the lineup on your own, but a few shows really jump out at me that might be of special interest to readers of this site, including:

  • Lee Fields & The Expressions/The James Hunter Six at Ships on 4/7

In some years, the festival also adds some rock/pop dates closer to the festival, so we’ll stay tuned for any news like that.

Jinx-O-Ween Night 2 – photos

What am I going to do on Halloween night? Stay home and eat entirely too much candy that I’m supposed to be passing out (Bottlecaps for the win, yo), or dress up like a weirdo, go to The Jinx and watch some amazing local musicians cover classic hardcore bands and Outkast? Uhh, both, duh.

Music didn’t start until 10 and the only kids who are still Trick-or-Treating at 9 are the entirely too old to be mooching candy and put no effort whatsoever into a costume, so, you know, screw them.

Seriously, the music was so much fun. Cover sets of Minor Threat, The Muffs, The Misfits, Outkast, and Rudimentary Peni tunes that were a blast from start to finish. I took lots of pictures while trying to keep the Energy Dome on my head. Check them out.
