Athens Popfest – photos

Athens Popfest has become a staple of the Athens music scene after a several year hiatus. It marks summer’s end (or, if you prefer, football season’s beginning), the end of no college students, no traffic. The lineup this year was good as always–I was bummed that I had other engagements and was not able to make many of the acts, but I enjoyed many that I saw! I miss when 40 Watt was one of the venues–I feel like its dive bar atmosphere perfectly complements the less-polished-than-Athfest vibe that Popfest goes for.

The first act I caught was Buxton, a twangy alt-rock group from Texas. I loved their sound–they were actually one of my favorite artists I’ve ever seen at a Popfest and I’ll definitely check them out in the future.

Bragg Jam 2018 in Macon – photos

I decided almost at the last minute to head to Macon for the Saturday of Bragg Jam, but still snagged a downtown hotel room for just little over $100 and had a typically great time wandering the festival, which takes over the downtown at the end of July each year.

This year’s Bragg Jam was different, though, largely because the festival expanded the concert crawl to Friday night in addition to the usual Saturday. As a result, I missed some of the bands I would most like to have seen — including Family & Friends and Blackfoot Gypsies — and it seemed to me that Saturday’s crowd was a little thinner than usual. It will be interesting to see what the organizers do next year.

Downtown Macon is simply an awesome location for a festival like this. Grant’s Lounge, the Library Ballroom, Fresh Produce Records, Hargray Capitol Theatre, The Hummingbird State and Taproom — everywhere you turn, there’s an interesting venue that seems just right for the city and this festival. And this year’s weather was surprisingly mild — we barely even worked up a sweat wandering the wide blocked off streets.

I took only my FujiFilm x100t, which limited my shots a little, but it’s a great camera to carry for a long day of great music. Lots more photos with bands labeled after the jump:

Bragg Jam: photos + review

Headed down to Macon last month for Bragg Jam–this is always one of my favorite festivals of the year. Great combination of stellar music, fantastic venues, & good local restaurants.

Lakota John | Library Ballroom

This was my first time attending on a Friday. The first act I caught was the wonderful Lakota John, a ragtime duo. The pair performed by the slogan “blues doesn’t have to be sad,” and their music was a combination of upbeat rhythms and ragtimey vocals. The singer was accompanied by a buddy who shook an Altoids can to provide a beat.

Juna | Library Ballroom

Next up was Juna, an Athens-based punk pop five piece. The slightly screamy vocals were impressive in the confines of the Library Ballroom. They reminded me a lot of Mayday Parade.

Family & Friends | The Capitol

Every Time I Die, Vatican and Sins of Godless Men at The Jinx – photos

Damn, Savannah (and it would appear a good number of people willing to travel)! On a Monday night?? A sold out, packed out, sweltering, loud as hell, stage-diving, guitar-playing-on-the-bar metalcore explosion of energy on a Monday night?? Did that just happen??

Seriously, there’s not a lot I can say that pictures won’t say better. It pretty much sounded like the pictures. Here’s a handful, with a ton more after clicking through. Maybe I caught you in the middle of your super rad stage dive, only one way to find out.

Athfest Day 2-3: photos

Athfest weekend in downtown Athens was a blast! Unfortunately, my best lens for low light shooting has been in the shop all summer, so I wasn’t able to get as good of indoor shots as I would’ve liked. Here are some highlights:

Dangfly!

Athfest Day 1: photos

Friday shots from June’s Athfest in downtown Athens. The day was hindered by heavy rains that moved several headliners from the main stage into the tiny beer garden tent. Even with the deluge, the day was a blast and the music was great. Athfest is always a highlight of the summer for me and I really enjoyed all the acts I saw.
