A.V. Club’s consistently funny feature, Hatesong, invites artists of all sorts to talk about the song that they hate most in the world. Laura Pleasants, guitarist/vocalist of Kylesa is not a fan of Nickelback’s “Rockstar” or Bro-rock in general. This is both unsurprising and comical.
notes from CMJ: Woodkid at Webster Hall
A couple of weeks ago, Savannah Stopover‘s Kayne Lanahan profiled Woodkid in a post here at hissing lawns. Kayne and colleague Peter Robaudo are checking out bands at CMJ Music Marathon in NYC this week. She sent along the following notes and a few of Peter’s pics from the Woodkid show last night at Webster Hall in Greenwich Village:
More than 1500 people packed into Webster Hall in Greenwich Village last night for Woodkid‘s 1st official show in his new hometown…the artist has just moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which he humbly admitted to the crowd was “cliched, I know”.
An 8 piece band, including a 3 horn section and 2 stand up drums wowed the audience from start to finish with pin drop quiet moments interspersed with moments of sheer grandeur, percussion madness, and a palpable energy I haven’t witnessed in a concert in a long time. Woodkid is completely in charge of his show: serving as singer, maestro and conductor, pumping up the crowd and bringing them back down with the same precision his lasers punctuate the music.
Even after two encores he still wouldn’t or couldn’t leave the stage. He genuinely seemed in awe of the reception of the NY audience – staring into the crowd with the house lights fully up, holding his hand over his heart and profusely thanking the audience for “liking my project” as the crowd continued to wildly clap and cheer.
Signalling that the night was finally over, he ended the show as majestically as it began with a beautiful drum and horn rendition of “Taps”.
I’m not sure anything else at CMJ this week is gonna be able to come anywhere close to that!
Here’s one pic, more after the jump:
more photos from The Jinx 10th anniversary: Murder By Death and American Aquarium
Another set of photos from Thursday’s 10th anniversary show at The Jinx with Murder By Death and American Aquarium. These are all by Petee Worrell, a regular contributor to The Blue Indian who is also going to be contributing regularly (I hope) to hissing lawns.
First, MBD and then AA. Some of these look especially good if you click to enlarge. More after the jump.
Futurebirds playing announcement party for 2014 Savannah Stopover on 11/21
In a special show at The Jinx on 11/21, Futurebirds from Athens will play the announcement party for the lineup of the 2014 Savannah Stopover, which is scheduled for March 6th-8th.
Futurebirds’ last Savannah gig was at the 2012 Savannah Music Festival in the big space of Trustees Theater. It will be fun to see them in the tighter confines of The Jinx.
Tickets will be just $10 and will be available online or at The Jinx beginning on October 24. We’ll obviously be posting a lot about the Stopover as acts are announced and as the 4th annual festival gets nearer
a singer-songwriter haven: The Sentient Bean
I can’t even begin to guess how many touring singer-songwriters and other out-of-town acts have performed at The Sentient Bean since its founding in 2001. When we talk about Savannah’s “venue problem”, we’re usually talking about the lack of larger spaces, but the city also lacks regular spots for solo and acoustic acts that don’t already have local followings.
There’s an especially nice lineup of acts playing the Bean over the next few days. You can read about them on the Bean’s website, so here I’m just embedding some music:
Tuesday, Oct. 15: Kwesi K, Amy Andrews
Amy Andrews from OMPlive on Vimeo.
Thursday, Oct. 17: Whetherman
Friday, Oct. 18: Brian Johannesen
Saturday, Oct. 19: Dylan Jane
Shows at the Bean typically start at 8 p.m. with a $5 suggested donation. The Sentient Bean is at 13 East Park Ave.
Larry Jack’s Magical Music Tour (10/15-10/22)
Hey guys,
I’m back for another week. What a fun, LONG weekend, starting with Thursday’s J.J. Grey show, on to the Jinx’s 20th 10th Anniversary with American Aquarium and Murder By Death, and culminating in the Stattsfest at the Muse Arts Warehouse on Sunday. The Stattsfest organizers did a spectacular job. It was such a kid-friendly event this year. I hope this becomes the template for an annual event.
I want to let everyone know that there will be a SECRET SHOW coming up this Saturday at The Wormhole. Details can’t be announced until Thursday. I am willing to bet that most of the people who read this blog will really want to go to this show. Be sure to check back on the hissing lawns site (or “like” it, if you haven’t already) this Thursday for this exciting news and first crack at tickets for this event. And don’t forget the show is this Saturday. Tell all of your coolest friends to like this page (don’t tell the uncool ones, maybe even defriend them so they won’t accidentally get here), they will want a shot at the tickets.

photos from The Jinx 10th anniversary: American Aquarium and The Savannah Sweet Tease Burlesque Revue
The Jinx’s 10th anniversary party was everything that I hoped it would be — and more.
American Aquarium stopped in Savannah for the first time since summer 2012 and played a typically tight, energetic, moving set.
And then Murder By Death killed it for about an hour and a half.
The music was preceded by The Savannah Sweet Tease Burlesque Revue.
Congratulations to owner Susanne Guest Warnekros on an impressive 10 years — and here’s to 10 more.
In this post, some photos of American Aquarium and Savannah Sweet Tease (all by me, Bill Dawers). We’ll have more photos in the coming days.

Audiotree posts excellent live session by Heyrocco – video
Audiotree has posted their half hour session with Heyrocco recorded a couple of weeks ago in Chicago.
The seven-song set includes several of the Charleston trio’s intense and catchy newer numbers — all captured in the high production values that are an Audiotree hallmark.
From the session description:
Their sincere, emotionally driven lyrics heavily fuel grungy, dark-pop tunes. Forceful bass lines create momentum and heavy effects on drums and guitar add sonic depth to a 90′s rock framework.
Luckily, the band feels most at home in a van – they’re amping up their tour schedule to anticipate the release of their debut full-length album.
I’d call Heyrocco’s Comfort from 2012 a really satisfying debut, although I suspect the next full-length will feel more cohesive and be much more heavily promoted.
Here’s “Loser Denial” and “First Song” embedded via YouTube, but check out the complete session, which includes five other songs (“Jake Miller’s House Party”, “Happy”, “Virgin”, “Mom Jeans” and “Elsewhere”) and some of the banter between the band and the host. The session can be purchased for $5.99.
That’s Nathan Jake on lead vocals and guitar, Christopher Cool on bass, and Tanner Cooper on drums.
You can find Heyrocco on Facebook, Bandcamp, Tumblr, and Twitter.
band to watch: The Griswolds
This is another guest post from Kayne Lanahan, CEO and founder of Savannah Stopover.
For fans of…Vampire Weekend, Oberhofer, Cayucas
The Griswolds are a 5-piece band from Sydney, Australia whose debut EP, Heart Of A Lion, has caught the eyes and ears of music bloggers around the globe. They burst onto the Aussie scene in 2012 after winning the Triple J Radio “Unearthed” award and were selected to play alongside Passion Pit at Australia’s largest music festival.
Describing themselves as “the chameleons of pop, the beating drums of euphoria” is pretty dead on. The music is buoyant, colorful and infectious. The title track “Heart Of A Lion” was recently used in the pilot episode of CBS’s new comedy “We Are Men”. It’s a great track (check out the raucous video below) but I’m partial to “The Courtship of Summer Preasley” which has a distinctly Vampire Weekend flair.
The band arrives in the U.S. this week for a six-month stay, extensive touring and the release of their debut album in the 1st quarter of 2014.
You can learn more about The Griswolds on Facebook and Tumblr.
You can purchase their EP on Bandcamp.
Os Mutantes playing at Dollhouse on 11/20
MusicFile Productions, parent company of Savannah Stopover and Revival Fest, will continue its impressive run of shows with the Brazilian band Os Mutantes on Wednesday, November 20 at Dollhouse Productions. Capsula, from Buenos Aires, Argentina will open.
From today’s press release:
Os Mutantes, pronounced “Os Moo-Tan-Chis”, is a Brazilian psychedelic rock band formed in Sao Paulo during the Brazilian Tropicália movement in 1966 by Sérgio Dias (guitar, bass, vocals), Arnaldo Baptista (bass, keyboards, vocals) and Rita Lee (vocals).
The importance and influence of Os Mutantes reaches across the music scene at a national and international level. They are recognized as one the most creative, dynamic, radical and talented groups of the psychedelic era and in the history of world music. The group has influenced everyone from of Montreal to Talking Heads, Kurt Cobain and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Besides their innovative use of feedback, distortion and studio tricks of all kinds, Os Mutantes are the pioneers in blending punk and rock and roll with Brazilian musical elements and themes.
This should be an excellent party, so mark your calendars. More to come.

fascinating new (and long) interview with Peter Buck in Salon
Peter Buck (of R.E.M. and countless other projects) might not like to give interviews, but he sure gave a long one to David Daley for Salon: Peter Buck: “I think we were all really ready for a change”.
From the piece:
Buck has always stood at the ready to produce an album or get in the van with friends. He made four albums — in August! His list of credits is an amazing one that covers some of the most vital rock artists of the last several decades: the Replacements, the Feelies, Uncle Tupelo, Robyn Hitchcock, Corin Tucker, the Decemberists, Billy Bragg, Suzanne Vega, Warren Zevon, not to mention his work with the Minus 5, the Baseball Project, Tuatara, Grant-Lee Phillips, John Wesley Harding and so many more — including his latest project, Tired Pony, Buck’s second album collaborating with Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody.
Buck was the member of R.E.M. who always wanted to do more, faster — so maybe it’s no surprise that he has filled his time since the beloved Rock & Roll Hall of Famers disbanded in 2011 on project after project, while also curating the Todos Santos music festival, where all of these many acts often play together. Then there’s his solo career fronting a blisteringly fun bluesy/rockabilly band, often backed by all-stars he’s lent his name to in the past; a second vinyl-only album is close, and one song has already been revealed.
And here’s that song that has been revealed — as much a performance poem as a song, a meditation on place and being:
A snippet from the interview:
Do you miss playing those songs?
Well, I love those songs. But I never want to play “Losing My Religion” again. “Man on the Moon,” it’s a great song. But it’s five minutes long and I’ve played it a couple thousand times.
Larry Jack’s Magical Music Tour (10/8-10/15)
Hey guys,
I really hope some of y’all listened to me and made it out to see some live music last week. I caught several very good shows. Some standouts were Epic Cycle played one of their best shows ever at the Bayou last week, with guests Deric Murphy and Dr. Dan (of the Looters). Dr. Dan seems to really bring out the best in his musicians. Just like I thought, the weekend had tons of good music. Eric Sommer at Abe’s On Lincoln and Niche at The Jinx were especially good shows. And I got to see three of Savannah’s best bands on Saturday, Bottles & Cans at Social (with plenty of erotically-costumed people, for some reason) and the Acccomplices/ Train Wrecks show at the Jinx.
Enough talking about last week, time to post the list/recommendations for this week. Two shows to make sure to see this week are The Jinx’s 10th Anniversary on Thursday and The Stattsfest at Muse Arts Warehouse on Sunday.
Tuesday 10/8
Joe Nelson at Foxy Loxy (8pm) – Another good show at Foxy Loxy.
Thursday 10/10 – A very busy night
J.J. Grey & Mofro and the Dirty Guv’nahs at Lucas (8pm)
Sweet Tease Burlesque, American Aquarium, and Murder By Death at Jinx 10th Anniversary – This show is not to be missed, two great bands. I will be headed here after the J.J. Grey show.
Omingnome at Zunzi’s 2 (9:30-12:30) – I hope to sneak over here between sets at the Jinx.
Friday 10/11
Train Wrecks at Rail Pub (6pm) – I haven’t seen a band in the new courtyard at Rail Pub
City Hotel at Moon River Brewery (6-9p)
Waits & Co. at Blowin’ Smoke (7pm)
Versatile at Congress Street Social Club (10pm) – Good R&B music.
Hypnotics at Molly MacPherson’s (10pm) – Two man band that plays originals and garage rock covers.
Passafire, Bear Fight!, and Ballyhoo at Jinx (10p) – Bear Fight! is pretty heavy. Seems like an odd combination with Passafire, but could be interesting.
