Hey everybody,

Who would have thought a random weekend in November/ December would have such good music.  Just pointing out a few highlights, in case you needed some help picking out where to go this weekend.  And you may as well go out, you’ll be using Christmas as an excuse for a while after this.  There are way too many choices this Friday, especially early (another reason to go out).  You won’t go wrong with bluegrass from City Hotel, latin music at El-Rock, jam music from Perpetual Groove, or (what I am sure will be) a rocking show with Matt Eckstine at Rail Pub.   Don’t party too hard though, because the night brings the return of AM Rodriguez at the Jinx, Charlie Fog Band doing Jerry Garcia at the Social Club, and the always excellent T Hardy Morris at El-Rocko.  Things aren’t much easier on Saturday, I recommend the early birds catch Damon & The Shitkickers at the Jinx for happy hour, then you’ve got to choose between punk at El-Rocko, Smiths/Morrisey tribute band at Jinx, jam bands at Barrelhouse, or a new Savannah super group at Molly’s (members of Accomplices and Velvet Caravan).  Enjoy the weekend!

Savannah Stopover announces first wave of 30+ bands for 2019

Savannah Stopover announced the first wave of bands for the 2019 festival, which will take place in a variety of downtown venues from March 7 to 9.

We know a fair number of the acts announced so far, but there are more that are new to us. Since the festival’s founding, Kayne Lanahan and her team have worked year-round to find promising up-and-coming bands that haven’t played the Savannah market, so for regular attendees the festival has become a heady mix of discovering acts that are new to us and revisiting others that we already love.

Deerhunter had already been announced as a festival headliner, and I’m thrilled by the other familiar names here, like Lucy Dacus, The Joy Formidable, Andrew Combs, Susto, The Bright Light Social Hour, and The Minks (who played a great set to open for Aaron Lee Tasjan a few nights ago at El-Rocko). And in the coming weeks I’ll be digging more deeply into the playlist and exploring other acts from there.

With this first wave, Stopover has announceda Kanine Records showcase on Saturday, March 9. Kayne tells us that Lio Cerezo, Kanine’s founder, was an early supporter of Stopover and that the festival has included 11 of the label’s bands over the years. The 2019 Kanine showcase will feature three acts from outside the U.S.: Honey Lung from London, Living Hour from Winnipeg, and Tallies from Toronto.

If you want to start learning more about the bands, check out the playlist on Spotify, but Stopover attendees would likely have a great time without any planning at all. The venues are within walking distance, and sometimes our favorite bands weren’t even on our radar before the festival. Tickets are now on sale.

It’s been a hot minute since I made a post or photo-gallery. A big part of that is due to moving from the lowcountry out to Dallas, Texas. That being said, Texas has always been a state of of incredible performers & I look forward to giving our followers a spicy taste of The Lone Star State now that I’ve settled in. I lived in Austin & San Anotnio some fifteen years ago, and have missed the sound of boots shuffling across the dance-floor, long-neck bottles of Lone Star brew, and real-deal county music as opposed to “new country”. Imagine my surprise to find that things have changed, a variety of of style has taken over, and the doors have opened to much more than what I remember.

Dallas Porchfest 2018

I first became aware of Porchfest through Atlanta’s version in Oakhurst, but in speaking with an organizer they are are related (the original started in New York), but all have their own style & sound. Unfortunately I only managed to catch the last hour, but talent abounds here, just as much as any other of the same name.
