Savannah Stopover confirms schedule, venues for 2019 festival
Last week, Savannah Stopover confirmed most of the details for the 2019 festival, which takes place March 7th to 9th with 85 shows and events at an eclectic mix of venues here in Savannah, Georgia.
We have been huge fans of Stopover here at hissing lawns – the 3-day indie music festival has brought so many amazing acts to town that I don’t even know where to begin.
Lucy Dacus returns to Stopover this year to headline opening night in the North Garden at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum — a sublime venue. Dacus’ recent work has been honored as NPR Music’s #4 album and #2 song of 2018 and Paste Magazine’s #1 album of 2018.
Deerhunter will make their first ever Savannah appearance on March 8th at the Ships of the Sea. We love their latest album, Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?
The Welsh band The Joy Formidable will headline at Ships on the 9th, and there will also be nine performances this year at Service Brewing on Indian Street, just a few blocks from Ships. Service will host headliners SUSTO, The Bright Light Social Hour, and Andrew Combs — what an impressive list.
It’s really tough in a single post to capture the sense of discovery and adventure at Stopover. I typically spend a lot of time planning various routes and options — usually a mix of bands that I know pretty well and others that I’ve previewed — but I suspect some attendees have even better experiences just by drifting between venues as the mood strikes. The clubs that are especially heavily used for Stopover — Barrelhouse, El-Rocko, The Jinx, Congress Street Social, and Club One — are within a few minutes’ walk of each other, and Savannah of course has an enlightened ordinance that allows to-go cups in much of the Historic District. Take a look at this year’s venues (an * indicates all ages access):
- Barrelhouse South – 125 West Congress Street
- Club One – 1 West Jefferson Street
- *Congress Street Social Club – Outside Stage – 411 West Congress Street
- Congress Street Social Club – Inside Stage – 411 West Congress Street
- El-Rocko Lounge – 117 Whitaker Street
- *The Grey – 109 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd
- The Jinx – 121 West Congress Street
- *Ships Of The Sea Maritime Museum – North Garden/Assembly Room – 41 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd.
- Perry Lane Hotel- Wayward Bar- 257 E. Perry Street
- Perry Lane Hotel- Pelegrin Rooftop Lounge ( Credentials Required) – 256 E. Perry Street
- Service Brewing Co. – 574 Indian Street
- The Stopover Artist Lounge – 18 E. Broughton Street ( Credentials Required)
- *Festival HQ & Ticketing – 216 W. Broughton Street ( Opening March 4th, 2019)
Sched provides a really great platform and app for organizing your Stopover experience. Do yourself a favor and download it. You can get a taste of it by looking at the full schedule and re-sorting by venue, by type of event, etc.
For a lot more detail about Stopover, check out this great interview with festival founder and CEO Kayne Lanahan by Josh Peacock, editor of Do Savannah at the Savannah Morning News.
It’s been kind of quiet here at hissing lawns for the past few months — we are always looking for new contributors — but we will have a lot more about Stopover in the coming weeks.

Yo La Tengo with The Sun Ra Arkestra and Graham Nash at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom – photos
Yo La Tengo started their tradition of hosting charitable Hanukkah shows in 2001 at the legendary music venue Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ. The tradition continued through 2013, until Maxwell’s became a characterless bar with an emphasis on TV sports, putting an end to the music. Fast forward to 2017 – after a 3-year hiatus, YLT continues the eight night performances at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC.
Part of the magic of these shows are the surprise guest musicians and comics. Nobody quite knows who’s going to show up on a given night. These photographs were taken on the first night of the eight show run, December 2, 2018. Special guests were Graham Nash and The Philly-based Sun Ra Arkestra .

Larry Jack’s Magical Music Tour – Year-End Review (2018)
Hey everybody,
It’s time for another one of those year-end lists. For those of you that don’t know me, I’m that old guy you see at all those shows you go to that always has a big smile on his face. I keep track of all the shows I go to and publish a list of them hissing lawns at the end of the year.
The grand total of shows this year was 516. That’s better than last year’s 436. But I don’t think I’ll ever be able to beat 749 shows in 2014.
This year had a few surprises, probably the biggest one was that I had seen the most shows at Barrelhouse South. Second most shows was at the Jinx. El Rocko came in a close third. Molly MacPherson’s, Congress Street Social Club, and Bayou Cafe round out my most popular half-dozen venues.
1.Barrelhouse South – 87
2. Jinx – 84
3. El-Rocko Lounge – 76
4. Molly MacPherson’s – 36
5. Congress Street Social Club – 34
6. Bayou Cafe – 23
For the first time, I had a tie for the most-seen act. I saw the very talented Matt Eckstine ten times last year (and that doesn’t include last week’s excellent Accomplices reunion show). I saw him play as a solo act, a duo, and an electric band. I also saw the great guitarist/vocalist Jon Lee (Murphy) and the Apparitions ten times this year, resulting in a tie for first. You can catch this band at a variety of places, including Molly MacPherson’s, Bayou Cafe, Rail Pub, and Warehouse. The Hypnotics, one of my favorite party bands, was tied for third. Another surprise this year was Individually Twisted was in a tie for third. You can often catch this hard rock cover band at City Market or Barrel House. I did enjoy seeing two great Savannah guitarists and their bands, Eric Culberson and Ben Keiser, eight times this year. Bottles & Cans, led by one of Savannah’s most unique vocalists, Ray Lundy, was one of my most seen bands this year (7). I saw another five Savannah bands a half-dozen times this year to round out my most-seen dozen. They included my perennial favorites, The Train Wrecks, as well as newer bands Wood & Steel, The Mercers, The Ramages (who?), and Nancy Druid.
1. Matt Eckstine – 10
2. Jon Lee’s Apparitions – 10
3. Hypnotics – 9
4. Individually Twisted – 9
5. Eric Culberson Band – 8
6. Ben Keiser Band – 8
7. Bottles & Cans – 7
8. The Train Wrecks – 6
9. Wood & Steel – 6
10. The Mercers – 6
11. The Ramages – 6
12. Nancy Druid – 6
All in all, I feel it was a very good year for Savannah music. Of course, most of the shows I have listed are local bands. Don’t forget, there are plenty of touring acts that come downtown also, and they are often supported by local artists. Whenever possible, try to get downtown and support any type of music, but especially try to see some of our home-grown talent. I hope to see you around somewhere this year.
