Zimmer and Rudd EP Release Show

Two of the city’s finer musicians are having an EP release party this Saturday at the Tybee Post Theater. Aaron Zimmer and Jay Rudd are known to most of you as half of one of my favorite local bands, City Hotel. Somehow, during their busy schedule with their band, they have been able to record a disc. The EP Release Show should be a good time to try to catch these two guys in a beautiful environment.

They were kind enough to send me a press release, like I knew what I was doing or something (I hope I’m not violating a copyright or something posting it):

Jay Rudd and Aaron Paul Zimmer are releasing a new EP entitled “Zimmer and Rudd, Vol. 1,” a five song collaboration which includes brand new original material written by each artist. The event will take place at Tybee Post Theater on Saturday, July 13 at 8PM with special guests Russel Cook and the Sweet Teeth opening.

Zimmer and Rudd draw from the traditions of bluegrass guitar and mandolin duos such as the Monroe Brothers and Skaggs and Rice, adding a modern twist drawing from their varied influences. The duo have played together in Savannah-based bluegrass band City Hotel since 2011, releasing two full-length albums and touring the east coast. Last year Zimmer released his solo debut album “Saints and Heretics” which was awarded best local album of 2018 by the readers of Connect Savannah. Russel Cook has released six albums with his wife Cameron as Little Country Giants and is currently exploring new sounds as Russel Cook and The Sweet Teeth, a two guitar and drums juke-joint style trio featuring the sparkling guitar work of Scotty Knight and ace drummer Jeremy Clark.

The intimate atmosphere and unparalleled acoustics of the historic Tybee Post Theater will make for an unforgettable night of original music.  “Zimmer and Rudd, Vol. 1” will be available for purchase at the event.

Little Tybee, Wood and Steel, Jezebel Heart play first public concert at great new venue Victory North – photos

If you’re a fan of live music in Savannah, you probably already know about the great opening night for Victory North with Little Tybee, Wood and Steel, and Jezebel Heart. I wrote about the exciting debut of the new space for Do Savannah, so hop on over there for more details.

Here, let’s just stick to photos that give a sense of the space and the excellent performances. Photographer Dylan Kennedy and I didn’t get there quite in time to get any good shots of Jezebel Heart’s opening set, but we got plenty of shots of Wood and Steel and Little Tybee, which is currently touring the East Coast. Great night from the musicians, the enthusiastic crowd, the team at Victory North, and Zero Mile Presents booking.

The Appleseed Cast, Tennis System, Dreamend at Mini Graveface Fest at The Jinx – photos

What a great night of music at last week’s Mini Graveface Fest at The Jinx. Ryan Graveface, of Graveface Records and Graveface Records & Curiosities, routinely pulls together shows and other events that take me by surprise even when I am expecting to be surprised — and he did it again this time.

The Appleseed Cast, who headlined the well-attended mid-week show, had never played Savannah before, but it was no surprise that they already had diehard fans here. Jinx regulars know that the crowd can get pretty chatty, especially toward the end of the night, but there weren’t any distractions like those during The Appleseed Cast’s set — the audience even paid rapt attention between songs.

Tennis System killed it too. No banter, just serious, high-energy rock and roll.

Ryan’s own project Dreamend led things off, and he was joined by Oklahoma City-based drummers Matt Duckworth and Nicholas Ley for a spectacular set. Matt and Nick have played with Flaming Lips and have their own project Brothers Griin, which closed out the night with a DJ set. The pair were in Savannah for a week as part of the ongoing artistic exchanges by SixTwelve.

We have photos from three of us. The first set is by new contributor Dylan Kennedy (check him out on Instagram), and if you click on through, you can see the rest of Dylan’s, then mine with the watermark, and then Tom Cartmel’s. Great night, great show.

AthFest 2019 Preview

It’s just a few short weeks until AthFest (Athens, GA), which always marks a high point of the summer for me.

While the outdoor market and stages are awesome, the real gems of the weekend are often found in the Club Crawl. The Club Crawl spans a variety of historic Athens venues, including the incomparable 40 Watt Club and the Georgia Theatre. All outdoor stages are free admission throughout the weekend, and the Club Crawl shows are a spectacular value–admission to all shows is free with purchase of a wristband.

An interesting note about this year’s lineup: three of the headlining acts, Pylon Reenactment Society (playing on the outdoor main stage on Sunday), of Montreal (playing at 40 Watt on Saturday), and The Whigs (playing at Georgia Theatre Friday night at midnight) are all Athens natives. AthFest always features a great variety of music, and this year is no different–everything from rap (local rapper + politican Linqua Fraqa is always a pleasure to see live!) to heavy rock (Double Ferrari was one of the coolest festival shows I saw last year) to the alt rock that Athens is well-known for.

Additionally, there’s always unique acts that you won’t find anywhere else, like the Athens Cowboy Choir (they’re exactly what it sounds like) and Klezmer Local 42 (a super fun local group that combines traditional Jewish music with swing, rock, and sea shanties).

AthFest is held in downtown Athens, Georgia the weekend of June 21-23. Club Crawl wristbands can be purchased at www.athfest.com . Proceeds help support AthFest Educates, a non-profit supporting music and arts education for local youth.

Murder By Death + Sarah Shook & The Disarmers at New Brookland Tavern – photos

All of our contributors besides Larry Jack have been pretty slack about uploading photos and writing posts for the past few months, as regular readers know, but the music goes on … We will have a post up soon about the ongoing search for new contributors, fresh voices, edgier photos.

I was in Columbia, S.C. last week for a stellar show at New Brookland Tavern by Murder By Death and Sarah Shook & The Disarmers. Regulars of The Jinx here in Savannah would feel immediately at home like I did at NBT. Sarah Shook & The Disarmers were even better than the last time I saw them — I never tire of the band’s grungy country (I’d love to hear Shook sing a set with T. Hardy Morris).

And Murder By Death commanded the stage with their usual power and grace. I write stuff for much of my income, but I find it difficult to express how much I love MBD.

I struggled with the lights on the edges of the stage, but I took a lot of photos. Click on through for lots more.
